Not every workflow deserves an AI tool bolted onto it. Here's where it consistently pays off for small teams, where it's mostly noise, and a real number on how many small businesses have actually adopted it so far.
Federal Reserve research published in April 2026 puts small business AI adoption at roughly 18-20% as of late 2025, depending on how broadly "using AI" gets defined — and notes that the smallest firms have been adopting faster than mid-size and large ones. In other words: most small businesses haven't adopted anything yet, and the ones that have skew small, not enterprise. There's no "everyone else is already doing this" pressure here — just a real, if uneven, trend.
The useful exercise still isn't "where can we use AI" — it's "where is the actual bottleneck," and then checking whether AI is the right tool for that specific bottleneck.
